Glossary › SFDR (Articles 6, 8 and 9)
The SFDR (Sustainable Finance Disclosure Regulation) is an EU regulation under which funds disclose whether and how they take sustainability into account – classified under Article 6, 8 or 9.
Article 6 applies to all funds and only requires information on sustainability risks. Article 8 covers funds that promote environmental or social characteristics, for instance through exclusions or minimum standards. Article 9 is intended for funds that pursue a sustainable investment objective, such as renewable energy or social infrastructure, and back this up with metrics.
The classification is a disclosure, not a quality seal: the provider classifies its own fund, and the requirements for Article 8 are broad. Anyone who wants to weight sustainability should read the pre-contractual information: which exclusions apply, and what minimum share of sustainable investments is committed? The EU is currently revising the regulation, so the classification may change.
Of the 139 active funds, 75 are classified under Article 8, 11 under Article 9 and 46 under Article 6; for 7 the information is missing. Article 9 funds are found mainly in infrastructure.
