What this is about

What this database does — and why it exists

Private-markets funds for retail investors are growing fast. Yet what matters most — when and how you get your money back, and what the fund really costs — sits deep in the prospectus and is nowhere comparable across providers. That is exactly what we make visible.

A market opening up

More and more ELTIFs and evergreen funds are being distributed to retail investors, some from as little as EUR 1. Access is there — orientation is not.

The real problem

Redemption terms, gates, notice periods and true total costs are named differently by every provider and buried deep in the documents. A clean comparison has not existed until now.

What we contribute

We compile these details in a structured way and make them comparable — with our own liquidity score showing how easily you can get at your money. Neutral, without recommendation.

Performance

What semi-liquid funds have delivered so far

Equally weighted total return indices by segment, calculated from the net asset values of the funds in this database — in euro, net of the ongoing charges of the share class used. Values prior to August 2026 are back-calculated.

The concept

What does "semi-liquid" mean?

These funds invest in non-listed assets and allow regular redemptions — but only up to a point. Three things are worth understanding before you subscribe:

1 · Redemption windowRedemption only on fixed dates — often quarterly, not whenever you like
2 · GateA cap per date on how much may be redeemed in total — often around 5% per quarter
3 · Notice periodNotice weeks in advance — months often pass between the redemption request and the payout

Principles

How we work

Three principles that make the difference — and that we keep visible instead of hiding them.

Neutral

No ranking, no recommendation, no paid placements. We compare — we do not rate the fund.

Traceable

The figures come from the prospectus and the PRIIPs KID and are made comparable across providers.

Honest about gaps

If a figure is missing from the document, it says "not documented" — not "0". The difference between it does not exist and we do not know matters.

The honest state of our data — openly disclosed:

Liquidity mechanics

Notice period documented for 119 of 140 funds, gate for 135. That is the biggest gap — and it happens to be the core promise.

Costs

Ongoing costs documented for 116 funds. The source is predominantly the PRIIPs KID, which makes them comparable across providers.

Share classes

Currently one figure per fund, not per share class. Fees differ considerably between classes — by up to 1.4 percentage points.

Empty field = not documented in the source we reviewed. Figures from the prospectus and the PRIIPs KID.

Important information. Not investment advice, not a recommendation, not a ranking. Only the prospectus and the PRIIPs KID of the respective fund are authoritative; no warranty is given for accuracy, completeness or currency. Semi-liquid funds are only partly liquid — redemptions can be capped, deferred or suspended; total loss is possible.

Which funds may you subscribe to?

Country of residence, investor category, amount — and you see which of the 140 funds we cover are legally accessible to you. 32 countries, neutral, no recommendation.

How we check and what “accessible” means

Accessible does not mean suitable. The check tells you what you are legally allowed to subscribe to — not what fits you. Semi-liquid funds can cap or suspend redemptions; a total loss is possible. The prospectus and the key information document are authoritative; your institution decides on your classification and the route to subscription.

The basis is the distribution notifications in the ESMA registers (ELTIF register and register of cross-border distribution), national registers (BaFin, FMA, AMF, FINMA) and provider disclosures, plus the minimum investment and investor category of each fund. Funds without authorisation in your country are shown for information only — they are not being offered.

Investor categories per country. Which categories you can choose depends on your country of residence: only some countries have a level between retail investor and professional client, and it has a different name in each. When in doubt we apply the stricter reading; more generous national special routes appear only as a note for the country.

Evidence: A register · B provider/research · C derived from the regulatory framework, no fund-specific evidence (in most countries this includes retail access to ELTIFs: the ESMA register shows it per fund only, not per country) · D unverified, no reliable statement.

Transparency note. This overview reports distribution authorisations and access conditions to the best of our knowledge; it is not an offer, not investment advice and not an invitation to buy. Only the prospectus and the PRIIPs KID of the respective fund are authoritative; your bank or adviser decides on your classification and the route to subscription. Funds without distribution authorisation in your country are shown here for information only — they are not being offered. Entries marked “derived” rest on the regulatory framework rather than on fund-specific evidence; “unverified” means no reliable statement is possible. Access data as at 5 October 2026.

How the access check works: four groups of countries

Whether a fund can be subscribed depends on the country of residence and the investor category. The 32 countries of the check fall into four groups:

  • EEA without an intermediate category (20: Liechtenstein, Spain, Portugal, Netherlands, Ireland, Sweden, Norway, Finland, Iceland, Poland, Hungary, Slovenia, Croatia, Romania, Bulgaria, Greece, Cyprus, Malta, Lithuania, Estonia). Retail, professional on request, professional. Whether a fund is open to retail investors depends on its marketing notification.
  • EEA with a national intermediate category (7: Germany, Luxembourg, Belgium, Denmark, Czechia, Slovakia, Latvia). An additional category between retail and professional client that applies to all funds. Examples: Germany: Semi-professional investor; Luxembourg: Well-informed investor.
  • EEA with a fund-specific intermediate category (3: Austria, France, Italy). The intermediate category applies only to funds authorised or listed for it. Examples: Austria: Qualified private client; France: Subscriber from EUR 100,000; Italy: Non-professional investor from EUR 100,000.
  • Third countries (2: Switzerland, United Kingdom). No EU marketing passport; the check lists only the investor categories for which an access route is documented.

Frequently asked questions about access

Can I buy an ELTIF as a retail investor in Germany?

Yes, provided the fund is notified for it: according to our evidence, 58 of the 139 funds we cover are open to retail investors in Germany (as at 5 Oct 2026). They are listed under funds for retail investors in Germany; before subscription, the bank or platform assesses suitability.

What is a semi-professional investor?

At least EUR 200,000 invested, a written risk declaration and an assessment of expertise and experience by the manager or distributor (§ 1(19) no. 33 KAGB). According to our evidence, 42 further funds can be subscribed in Germany from this category.

Why does the check show no funds for retail investors in Switzerland?

Retail investors without a mandate only if the fund is approved by FINMA (list of approved foreign collective investment schemes); on 5 Oct 2026 no fund in the database was listed. For opting-out clients the fund needs a Swiss representative and paying agent.
